
Andrew Stirling
Andrew Stirling is Science Director at
SPRU (science and technology policy research) and co-director of the
'STEPS' Centre (on 'Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability') at the University of Sussex.
With a background in natural science and the environment movement, he is a social scientist with wide interests in the governance of risk, sustainability and innovation. His current research focuses on various aspects of the governance of science and innovation. This includes scientific uncertainty and precaution; public engagement; the analysis of power, diversity and resilience in technological systems and practical tools for 'opening up' technology appraisal.
In this regard, he has served on a number of policy advisory bodies including the EU Energy Policy Consultative Committee, Science in Society Advisory Group and Expert Group on Science and Governance and the UK Advisory Committee on Toxic Substances, GM Science Review Panel and Defra Science Advisory Council.
